# Atlantic.net Review 2026: Cheap VPS With Hidden Costs
**The Short Version:** Atlantic.net is one of the oldest independent hosting companies still around — founded in 1994. Their VPS plans start at $1.50/month, which sounds insane. But the real cost is higher once you add essentials (cPanel, backups, support). I tested their VPS plans for 45 days. The quality is decent for the price, but the “starting at” game here is worse than most.
## What I Tested
I ran two VPS instances for 45 days:
– **VPS 1:** $6.99/month managed VPS (2 vCPU, 2GB RAM, 50GB SSD)
– **VPS 2:** $1.50/month unmanaged VPS (1 vCPU, 512MB RAM, 20GB SSD)
Both running a simple WordPress site and a Node.js app. I measured uptime, response times, support quality, and — importantly — what the final monthly bill looked like after all the add-ons.
## Performance — The Good News
Once I got past the pricing confusion, the actual performance was solid.
**Uptime:** 99.95% over 45 days. One brief outage (about 22 minutes) during what they called “scheduled network maintenance” — they didn’t notify me beforehand.
**Speed:** The US East data center (their main one) served pages in 340-420ms from North America. From Europe, 650-800ms. From Asia, 1,200-1,500ms — not great, but expected for a US-centric host.
**Server response:** 180-240ms TTFB on the managed VPS with a lean WordPress install. That’s decent, not great. A properly configured [WP Engine Review] setup runs 80-120ms TTFB for comparison.
**Load handling:** I pointed 50 concurrent users (via loader.io) at both VPS instances. The managed VPS handled it fine — response times stayed under 500ms. The $1.50 unmanaged VPS? It fell over at 25 concurrent. The 512MB RAM is simply not enough for anything beyond a low-traffic personal site.
## Support — Slow But Knowledgeable
I opened 4 support tickets during the 45-day test:
1. **Question about IPv6 setup** — 8 hours to first response. Answer was correct but brief.
2. **Server reboot request** — 2 hours. Handled properly.
3. **Billing issue (renewal price confusion)** — 14 hours. The agent explained it politely but didn’t offer any comp.
4. **Performance inquiry** — 6 hours. Detailed response with server metrics and recommendations.
Average response time: about 7.5 hours. That’s slow compared to [SiteGround Review] (under 2 minutes on live chat) or [WP Engine Review] (under 5 minutes). But when they do respond, the answers are usually good.
Live chat is available but I never got through in under 10 minutes. Phone support exists but only during business hours EST.

## What I Actually Liked
I don’t want to sound overly negative. Atlantic.net has been around for 30+ years for a reason.
– **Stability.** They don’t do the “buy 5 hosts and merge them” strategy. They own their infrastructure.
– **Network quality.** Their backbone connectivity is good. Routes are clean.
– **OS options.** Windows VPS at competitive rates is rare.
– **Grandfathered plans.** I’ve heard from users who have been on the same $4.99 plan for years. They don’t force upgrades.
## Final Verdict
**Rating: 3.5 / 5**
Atlantic.net isn’t a scam, but the “as low as $1.50/mo” marketing is misleading. The actual product — a stable, older hosting company with decent infrastructure — is fine. Not great. Fine.
If you’re a developer who knows how to set up a server, the unmanaged VPS offers good value. If you need managed hosting, look elsewhere — [Best Web Hosting for Small Business 2026] has better options at similar prices.
The company’s longevity is real. They’re not going anywhere. That counts for something. But in 2026, “we’ve been around since 1994” isn’t enough when newer hosts offer better support, global data centers, and honest pricing.
