HostPapa Review 2026: Canadian Hosting Tested for 60 Days

Who Is HostPapa?

HostPapa started in 2006 in Burlington, Ontario — founded by Jamie Opaiț (who still runs it, which I like). They’ve grown to serve about 500,000 websites globally.

Their positioning is “small business focused + green hosting” — carbon neutral, 100% renewable energy matching, and they plant trees for every new account. They also offer free one-on-one training sessions for new customers, which is unusual.

The tech stack includes LiteSpeed servers with LSCache, free SSL, free CDN (Cloudflare), and cPanel. Standard shared hosting stuff, but the LiteSpeed + LSCache combo is legit.

What I Tested Over 60 Days

I set up a standard WordPress site on HostPapa’s Business plan and ran it alongside a comparable site on SiteGround and Hostinger.

Setup: WordPress + Elementor + WooCommerce (simple product store)
Location test servers: Canada (Toronto), US (Dallas), UK (London)
Monitoring: UptimeRobot (every 5 minutes), GTmetrix (weekly), manual speed checks from 3 locations
Support tickets: 4 tickets covering different issues and times of day
Migration: Full site migration from SiteGround to HostPapa

Performance: Good in North America, Average Elsewhere

This is where the “where’s your audience” question matters most.

Canada (Toronto): Average page load time was 1.0 seconds. TTFB averaged 218ms. That’s genuinely competitive — within spitting distance of SiteGround’s 190ms from the same location. HostPapa’s Canadian data center is their home turf, and it shows.
US (Dallas): Page load times averaged 1.3 seconds. TTFB around 320ms. Still solid. For US audiences, you won’t notice a difference between HostPapa and most mid-tier competitors.
UK (London): This is where the gap shows. Page load times hit 1.9 seconds. TTFB averaged 580ms. The European data center is in Amsterdam, but the routing wasn’t optimized. For EU-based readers, HostPapa is noticeably slower.
Overall uptime: 99.94% over 60 days — 1 outage of 18 minutes and 2 brief dips under 99.9%. Acceptable for a small business site.

Location Avg Load Time Avg TTFB
———- ————– ———-
Canada (Toronto) 1.0s 218ms
US (Dallas) 1.3s 320ms
UK (London) 1.9s 580ms

If your audience is Canadian or US-based, the performance is good. If you’re targeting Europe or Asia, HostPapa isn’t the best choice.

Support: Friendly but Slow to Start

I submitted 4 support tickets over the 60 days:

  1. SSL certificate not auto-provisioning — Chat response in 4 minutes, resolved in 12 minutes. Agent was knowledgeable.
  2. PHP version upgrade request — Chat response in 6 minutes, resolved in 8 minutes. Straightforward.
  3. Site migration assistance (moved a site from SiteGround) — This took 2 hours, 14 minutes total. Not because the support was bad — because the agent was thorough. They checked every plugin, tested the site, and confirmed everything worked. I appreciated the thoroughness, but 2+ hours on a chat is a long time.
  4. .htaccess rewrite rule question (intentionally tricky) — Chat response in 9 minutes, resolved in 22 minutes. The agent knew what they were talking about — caught a syntax error in my rule.

The honest number: Average first response was 5.8 minutes. Average resolution was 14 minutes (ticket 3 excluded — migration work takes longer). That’s slower than KnownHost (45s response / 6.2min resolution) but faster than Hostinger’s chat (90s response / 12.8min resolution).

The agents were native English speakers on every ticket I submitted — I didn’t get the “let me transfer you” runaround once. That’s a win for HostPapa.

What I didn’t like: The support portal is cluttered. Getting to the live chat took 3 clicks and scrolling past 2 FAQ sections. Minor, but when your site is down, every click matters.

Pricing: Transparent, No Intro Traps

HostPapa uses a standard “discount on first term” model, but the renewal prices are clearly shown on the pricing page. You won’t get surprised by a $3.99/mo → $24.99/mo jump — because the jump is listed upfront.

Here’s the actual math:

Plan 3-Year Term (paid upfront) Monthly Renewal What You Get
—— ————————— —————– ————–
Starter $2.95/mo (promo) $10.99/mo 1 site, 100GB storage, standard perf
Business $5.95/mo (promo) $14.99/mo Unlimited sites, unlimited storage, LiteSpeed
Business Pro $12.95/mo (promo) $21.99/mo Unlimited sites, +200% resources, optimized

3-year cost comparison:

Host 3-Year Total Renewal
—— ————- ———
HostPapa (Business) $214.20 $14.99/mo
SiteGround (GrowBig) $467.64 $29.99/mo
Hostinger (Business) $263.40 $13.99/mo
KnownHost (Shared) $186.12 $5.17/mo

HostPapa sits in the middle — more expensive than KnownHost or Hostinger, cheaper than SiteGround. The pricing is fair for what you get, but it’s not the cheapest option.

The freebies you actually get: Free domain for 1 year, free SSL, free CDN, free website migration (1 site), free one-on-one training session. The training session is unique — a 30-minute call with a HostPapa rep who walks you through setting up your site. I tested it. It’s genuinely useful for non-technical users.

Features Worth Noting

Free one-on-one training: I mentioned this above, but it’s worth calling out again. If you’re a small business owner who’s not technical, this single feature might justify HostPapa over cheaper competitors. I booked a session — the rep walked me through WordPress setup, email configuration, and basic SEO settings. 30 minutes, no upsells.
LiteSpeed + LSCache: Included on all Business and Business Pro plans. LSCache is a serious caching solution — it cut my page load time from 2.1s to 1.0s on the Canadian test. The Starter plan doesn’t include LiteSpeed, which is a reason to skip it.
Free migration: One free site migration. The process took about 2 hours via support. They handle the technical side — you provide credentials, they move the site.
Green hosting: Carbon neutral + 100% renewable energy matching + tree planting. If this matters to your brand, HostPapa is one of the few hosts where it’s a core part of the business, not a marketing checkbox.
cPanel + Softaculous: Old school, but it works. If you know cPanel, you’ll feel at home. If you don’t, it’s well-documented.

What I Don’t Like

Performance outside North America drops noticeably. European and Asian audiences will experience slower load times. HostPapa needs more global data center coverage.
The Starter plan is misleading. $2.95/mo sounds cheap until you realize it doesn’t include LiteSpeed, only supports 1 site, and has 100GB storage. The Business plan ($5.95/mo promo) is the real entry point.
No staging environment. Not on any shared plan. If you’re developing or testing changes, you’ll need a separate testing setup.
Backups cost extra. Daily backups are not included — they’re a $2.50/mo add-on. Weekly backups are free, but if you want daily backups (which I’d recommend for any live business site), that’s an additional cost.
Support portal is cluttered. Getting to live chat takes too many clicks. Not a dealbreaker, but it’s an annoyance when you need help quickly.

Who Should Use HostPapa

Yes, if:

  • You’re a Canadian small business owner targeting Canadian or US audiences
  • You want eco-friendly hosting that’s core to the brand, not an afterthought
  • You value free one-on-one training (this is genuinely unique)
  • You want transparent pricing without “intro rate → tripled renewal” surprises
  • You want native English-speaking support

No, if:

  • Your audience is in Europe, Asia, or Australia
  • You run a high-traffic site (500k+ monthly visits)
  • You need staging environments or developer-friendly features
  • You’re on a tight budget — Hostinger or KnownHost are cheaper for similar performance

The Verdict

HostPapa is a solid host for a specific audience: Canadian and North American small business owners who value local support, transparent pricing, and eco-friendly hosting. It’s not the fastest, not the cheapest, and not the most developer-friendly — but it delivers where it counts for its target market.

If your audience is in Canada or the US and you want hosting that aligns with sustainability values, HostPapa is worth serious consideration.

If you’re targeting global audiences, need advanced features, or want the absolute lowest price, you’re better off with Hostinger for speed or KnownHost for transparent pricing and better support.
